| A "superpod" of dolphins was spotted yesterday off Cornwall England south coast. The pod, which witnesses said was made up of thousands of dolphins, was spread over about two and a half miles off Nare Head, on the Roseland Peninsula. Falmouth-based Orca Sea-Faris, which runs marine life spotting trips from its custom built RIB (rigid inflatable boat) immediately took photographers out to the spot. Captain Keith Leeves, who runs Orca with partner Suzi Gilpin, said: "It was just magical, we were blown out of the water by the sight. "I have only seen superpods like these six times in my life and the other five have been in the Southern hemisphere." Rolf Williams, interpretation officer at the National Marine Aquarium, Plymouth, said: "It is very exciting. It is not unusual to see pods of common dolphins this size, but it is unusual this time of year. The pods are normally of this size in the summer then they split up and have babies and so on." Capt Leeves continued: "We had been out that morning with a South African couple and a 74-year-old lady. We had seen some seals, including two that we released for the National Seal Sanctuary on Wednesday. "We were chasing the sun coming back in and spotted these dolphins about two miles out. "There were thousands. There were baby calves, mothers and males, some with scars and some with the tops of their fins missing. "There was also a huge work up of gulls, guillemots and gannets with another pod feeding. We could see mackerel jumping out of the water and the dolphins nearly catching them in their beaks. It was just going crazy. "We got back and made a few calls then went back out with a photographer and a hand-held video camera. That time the coaster came into view, they started getting very excited and did bow ride the coaster." Mr Williams added: "It is interesting that so many of them are moving in such a tight pod. We are asking everyone to keep their eyes peeled and let us know about sightings like these because we collect all information, including which way the pod is moving. "It may be made up of a majority of common dolphins but there may also be other interesting marine life in there too. The other week off Plymouth there was the first confirmed sighting of a Northern Bottle Nosed Whale since 1965. "It may be that the dolphins are taking advantage of good fishing but there is then the concern that they will get tangled in nets of fishing boats after the same thing."
Tangled
dolphin set free in Australia The 10-month-old dolphin, named Jumper, had a fishing hook in her mouth and was tangled in fishing line and three-metres of heavy rope when dolphin watchers spotted her on Saturday. Jumper and her mother, Crinkletop, were
caught in a net so that rescuers could untangle the young dolphin before
setting the pair free. "The dolphin didn't have any major wounds. It just had an abrasion where the rope had been rubbing on it and a mark where the hook was. The rope was quite thick and it would have been tiring her out. If we hadn't seen her she would have died of exhaustion and starvation. Another dolphin in the Port River tangled in about 30cm of fishing line would be closely monitored but, because of the small amount of line, would not be freed at this stage. It was hoped the line would untangle itself without intervention", Dr Bossley said. Bahamas Wild Dolphin Vacations
