Nassau Sheraton Cable Beach Resort - Bahamas-Nassau/Paradise Island

By John McNamara

After getting some advice from the Bahamian tourist board, we decided to stay at the newly renovated Sheraton Cable Beach and the plans were set. Coming to Bahamas for our weekend getaway, you cannot help but notice the happiness and warmth of the Bahamian people. We got off our flight from Florida and found a taxi outside of the terminal. You need to ask for the fares before leaving and we were assured a fare of $18 to our resort, the Sheraton Cable Beach. Since coming to Nassau a few times, I was not sure about Cable Beach and what to expect. The Sheraton Cable Beach is on a beautiful stretch of beach where other large hotels meet, west of the city of Nassau. Cable Beach is great if you want to be close but far enough away from the noise and hustle of Nassau city center and only a 15-minute drive from the airport.

Nassau Sheraton Cable BeachThe Sheraton Cable Beach is an impressive sight. The management has invested over 90 million dollars over the last few years into this property and it surely shows when you arrive. The grand and spacious lobby prepares you for a beautiful stay here. This resort offers an array of new amenities and dining options, as well as more than 24,000 square feet of meeting facilities and business center with Internet. So the hotel had a great mix of vacationers and business people. Of coarse it was hard to notice the business people at night because everyone on the property was having a good time.

Room at the Sheraton NassauSince being from Florida, the Sheraton Cable Beach had that South Beach Miami feel about it, very new and fresh, with vibrant colors and furnishing through out the property and rooms. We stayed in one of the 694 newly renovated rooms, with a magnificent view of the pool and ocean. Each room has a huge LCD flat screen TV, a super comfortable king size bed, with down pillows and comforter, help offset the AC that worked perfectly and kept the room very cool and comfortable.

Pools and Watersfalls in Nassau Cable BeachOne activity everyone knows to enjoy in the Bahamas is the water. This Resort has the best of both worlds, a combination of amazing pools, beach and ocean. You have a choice of 3 freshwater pools with flowing waterfalls; swim up bar, and oversized Jacuzzi nestled among lush tropical landscaping to create a romantic setting. At the pool, there are plenty of lounge chairs to enjoy and relax on.

After settling in our Resort, we explored out of our resort and discovered the charm of this island and the people. You can traveling around this island by Taxi, bus, or Rent a car. Taxi can be a good option, if you know your fares and can plan your trips. The cost from our hotel to Nassau, city center is about $20 each way. The ride is about 15 – 20 minutes from cable beach. There is a local bus that goes to Nassau and beyond, the #10; the cost is about $1.25 for each way, an inexpensive way to explore the island. Renting a car is more of a challenge because of the British style of driving and not knowing the area. Renting a car cost about $60 – $75 a day. Hint, when you get off the plane the tourist desk outside of the immigration line has good maps of the island; grab one so you can plot your course!!!

Eating on Nassau Paradise IslandYou do have the choice to eat on property and off property. On property you have the choice of 6 restaurants: Fine dining at Amici’, A Trattoria, the Sheraton Cable Beach signature restaurant features exquisite Italian cuisine. Here you can taste mouth-watering dishes such as Vitello Scaloppini, Bistecca Toscana and Salmone Arrostito…and don’t forget to try their award winning Tiramisu! Bimini Market or Dolphin grill is a causal diner’s delight. Bimini Market offers a generous buffet with a wide variety to choose from for breakfast, lunch and dinner. If one prefers to dine at the beach or poolside, The Dolphin Grill serves wonderful salads, hamburgers, and sandwiches. For guest who are in a rush an on the go, the Sandwich Shoppe, Caribe Café is a great place to grab a quick bite on the run. Last but not least are the Edgewater Bar and Telegraph Bar. The Edgewater Bar is a swim up pool bar so you never have to leave the water to get a drink! The telegraph Bar is located in the expansive two-story lobby of the hotel and serves their signature drink called the Cable runner – a mix of Vodka, Bacardi Limon, Blue Curacao and Sparkling wine…wow you got to try it!

We also explored off property locations to dine for mixed reviews. We went to the famous, Graycliff’s where the prices are super expensive and food is satisfactory. My wife had a shrimp dish that was not spectacular, really small shrimps for the price, but my filet migon in pepper sauce was superb, tender and flavorful. We are glad we experienced it but not go back unless it was a very special occasion. We also went to the Poop Deck in Nassau, classic local restaurant on the water. The grouper and shrimp were really good and the homemade carrot cake was to die for, a good choice. For local and fresh conch and shrimp you need to try to the Fish Fry strip of restaurants in Nassau. This is where the natives hang out, great prices that will not break your budget. We ate at Sea Haven one of the local restaurants beside Fish Fry and the food was super. We ordered fried snapper, conch fritters, shrimp with fries and cheesecake all under $35.00 for two people!

Swim with the dolphins Nassau Paradise IslandThe activities are plentiful here at the Sheraton Cable Beach and the local area. There is also a Kid’s club for the children that packs a lot of fun activities for various age groups and gives mom and dad some well deserved alone time! We had access to the watersports amenities at both Sheraton and the sister facility next door at the Wyndham. At the Wyndham is where the Crystal Palace Casino is located. Off property you have the opportunity to try Scuba Diving and Snorkeling in the crystal clear ocean, or go swimming with the dolphins Nassau, or visit the famous waterpark and aquarium at the Atlantis complex. Each one would be a great day outing.

Each night we finished out exciting day in the Bahamian with a chance to relax in the lobby area where live music played. It helped us smile and know we made the right choice of a destination because of the location; the property and most importantly the people were super warm and friendly. We plan to come back and hopefully stay much longer than 3 days here at the Sheraton Cable Beach Resort.
