Why People Write Dolfin Swim vs. Dolphin Swim

By Tarek Khaleel

The English language in its entirety is said to be the most complicated language in the history of the world, all other languages have a structure that is at least for the most part predictable and concrete, steady and follows through. English however is riddled with loopholes and exceptions, misnomers and complications. It’s enough to drive anyone nuts. Yet people learning the languages have dealt with these complications in their own ways in an attempt to simplify the language. One of the largest examples of these difficulties is the phonetic variation in the English language dealing with “ph”. Lets quickly look at this, the word “phone” if u said the word phone out loud, and you had absolutely no prior knowledge of the word or how it was spelt or the rules of grammar, you might spell it fone, not phone, this is because the ph sound is equivalent to the f sound phonetically in the English language. This rather elementary mistake seems to elude even adults to this day, as people continually pronounce and spell words with this variation with an f, and nobody knows if it is on purpose or to look cute, or if people are just plain ignorant and have been deprived of the most basic educational rights. This applies also to the word dolphin.

dolfinThe name is originally from Ancient Greek delphís; "dolphin", which was related to the Greek (delphys; "womb"). The animal's name can therefore be interpreted as meaning a 'fish' with a womb. The name was transmitted via the Latin delphinus, Middle Latin dolfinus and the Old French daulphin, which reintroduced the ph into the word. These changes over the centuries have seen the ph and the f interchange many times throughout the different and dominant languages of the time, it is no surprise that in the middle ages, a time where people were inherently ignorant, uninformed and uneducated they spelt and pronounced the word dolphin as dolfinus, or dolfin, and as the age of reason and enlightenment rolled back in, the ph was then reintroduced.

dolfins The really interesting thing about the word dolfin that is increasingly being used on the Internet and even in real life, is that if you were to break up the word “dol fin”, you would have the words doll and fin, so really every time you spell or pronounce that word in that manner what you are actually saying is a doll that has a fin in it, which is obviously utter and complete rubbish. However, I’m about to now explain to you why people use the word dolfin. As all cultures develop they show characteristics that define and portray their cultures uniquely that separate them from all others, for Americans , we love to abbreviate everything, it is seen as cooler , and “in” to use everything as an abbreviation. The purpose of this is to get the other person to say, huh what’s that mean? And then we are quick to explain the lengthened meaning so we sound more intelligent and feel superior in our own small insignificant little way. But this trend has gotten so much out of control that people in an effort to expand this tradition start not only to abbreviate words but shorten or change the meaning of words and manipulate them to a different spelling as to make it simpler and therefore sound better or cooler. This conforming to society and tradition is actually decreasing and potentially destroying the education of the country, because given enough time using these types of changes will begin to make it permanent, and soon enough future generations will begin to use it and think its correct by default cause we as the current population just think oh that’s cool. So basically in effect every time you write the word dolfin you are destroying Americas education, potential efficiency and our literacy, and subsequently changing the current word dolphin. All because you think it sounds cute or looks better, so congratulations on contributing to the change of a word in the English language.

Dolfin vs. Dolphin

dolfin swimAnyway on a lighter note, we want you to take a Dolfin Swim or, a Dolphin Swim, because they are cute, and adorable and loveable and just wonderful in everyway. We hope to have your business soon, and please we remind and encourage you to spell and pronounce the word dolphin, not because of anything stated above, but simply because it’s the right way of saying it, and when it comes down to it, we all want to be right. Thank you for taking the time to read this provocative and potentially enlightening article on the social conformities and habits of Americans and now its your turn to break the conformity and write the word the way its meant to be spelt. “DOLPHIN”
